“The family’ll be here soon.”

George neither responded, nor turned around. He continued staring out the window, down at Diagon Alley. It was the middle of the day, and the streets seemed barren, but for a few shoppers. It was as if the entire wizarding world knew.

Fred cleared his throat.

“Aren’t we gonna, uh, make that second room look more lived in? You know. So they won’t suspect.”

“Does it matter anymore?” George muttered bitterly, peering up the street. He saw a boy with white-blond hair in the distance, had to squint to see that it wasn’t who he’d thought. His heart pounded angrily in his chest anyway, immediately slowing when he felt Fred’s hands on his waist, felt Fred’s heat, felt Fred’s front press against his back.

“D’you think the school will open next year?” asked Fred.

“No.”

“Seriously?”

“How could it?”

Minutes passed. Neither twin moved.

Suddenly something wet dropped onto George’s shoulder. Fred’s reflection in the window showed a single glistening trail traveling down his cheek. This shook George to his core; his twin never cried.

He spun around quickly and embraced Fred.

“But we’ll see,” he said reassuringly, wishing he could believe it. “When autumn comes.”
