Drabble: Original - Identicals - Stuck in the 90s - Evan, Kelly - G
Title: Stuck in the 90s
Author: [info]madeyemax
Universe: Identicals, my NaNo project.
Characters: Evan and Kelly
Rating: G
Summary: An old song gets Evan all nostalgic.
Word Count: 154
Background: Evan and Kelly are identical twin brothers, Canadian, in their mid-twenties, separated at birth, only recently found each other. They’re on a mission, flying through space, taking care of some business.
Notes: This is similar to a conversation I’ve had with myself more than once. The most recent instance was just this afternoon while I was walking home from the local coffee shop, listening to my iPod. Semisonic’s Closing Time is mostly to blame for this drabble. Big Wreck’s That Song didn’t help matters.

Evan sighed. “I love this song.”

Kelly smiled. “Holy 90s, Batman. Haven’t heard this in a while.”

“Yeah. I miss the 90s.”

Kelly frowned. “Yeah? How come?”

“Ah, come on, it was pretty awesome.”

“Really?” Kelly frowned. “It was kind of a… nothing decade, don’t you think?”

“Nah. What about grunge?”

“Eh. Some good music there, I guess.”

“And great fashion.”

Kelly glanced sidelong at him and arched an eyebrow. “Grunge was great fashion?”

“Ugly, yes, but darned comfy.”

“Well… okay, I’ll give you that.”

Evan turned the music up and sat back in his seat. He clasped his hands over his belly and stared out at the passing stars.

When Kelly heard Evan sigh once more, he shook his head and laughed. “Dude, what is with you?”

“90s, man. Nostalgia, baby.”

“From what Elliot told me, you were as miserable as every other teenager back then.”

Evan exhaled heavily. “Yeah… It was great.”

Is half as pleasant
As our nostalgia for a past that we resented
Recast and reinvented
Until it’s how we meant it”
